The construction of a 132kV to 11kV Zone Substation in the Charlestown area allowed for the decommissioning of the aged existing 33/11kV Charlestown ZS and Dudley ZS. The new electricity substation included the construction of a double storey 11kV substation building and outdoor 132kV switchyard.

This project was completed on a steep site with numerous environmental sensitivities requiring careful consideration, including significant site clearing, remediation and removal of contaminated soils, before general bulk excavation and filling operations could be undertaken.

Project installations, such as the ultraflat concrete floor in the switchgear area achieving a 1mm vertical tolerance, and the two 8×5 metre swipe card electrically operated sliding gates, required close quality control to ensure that they met the specific requirements of the client.

The precast panels to the east and west entry areas received either an oxide colouring, or a special imprint, which when coupled with the expanded aluminium mesh panels that were anodised in 4 different tones, created a unique look for the project.

For a project with a significant civil scope and industrial basis, the architectural finishes and detailing allowed the project to assimilate well into a highly developed residential area.
